CBT and IPT Psychotherapy / Counselling in Brighton and Hove

Does life feel like its getting on top of you?
Could you benefit from a place to take some time-out?
... to explore your thoughts and feelings
... to make changes to your life
... to get back to being the person you want to be

My name is Rebecca and I am a practising Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist (CBT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapist (IPT) in Hove. I have extensive experience in working in mental health. I have been working for the NHS for 17 years, initially working in London as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN). I then moved to Brighton to work in a psychological setting and trained to be a CBT Therapist. I have now been practising CBT for over 10 years and am an accredited member of the BABCP. More recently I trained as an IPT therapist and am an accredited member of IPT UK.

Throughout our lives we can experience difficult times, such as feeling stressed and anxious, or we might experience significant life changes such as redundancy or bereavement, or having a hard time with our relationships. Sometimes these difficulties can get on top of us and start to affect our mood and self esteem and we might need a little help to get ourselves back on track.  Counselling / Psychotherapy can provide that. Therapy can help to increase self understanding and give us tools to manage.  For therapy to be effective it is important that you can connect with your therapist, that you feel safe, comfortable and understood.  The relationship is just as important as the therapy.  I believe that warmth, kindness, compassion, empathy, openness, and a willingness to be alongside you are valuable attributes of being a psychotherapist. I want you to feel hopeful that your future can improve. My training and expertise will enable us to explore your problems together and, at your pace, we will collaboratively explore ways of making changes to enable you to move forward.

I work with individuals on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

I have extensive experience in working with clients in a wide range of psychological and emotional difficulties:

  • Stress / Life changes
  • Low Self Esteem
  • Relationships
  • Panic Attacks
  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Bereavement

In addition to working individually with clients I have years of experience running CBT based Groups for people experiencing low self esteem, anxiety and depression. I am also a Supervisor to other group facilitators .
If you are looking for a group to be set up, e.g. perhaps your company would like to run such a group for employees, then please do contact me to discuss. Alternatively if you are a facilitator of a group and require supervision
I am also able to offer 'Introduction to CBT' Workshops.

My psychotherapy practice is just off Church Road which is within easy reach of Hove Train Station and other public transport in Brighton, Hove and Portslade. Saturday and evening appointments are available, including Fridays.

Contact me to arrange a free telephone consultation so that you can decide if therapy would be helpful for you. If I cannot help you I can refer you on to someone who can.

Upcoming Workshop: Managing Stress and Anxiety with CBT and TRE
    Sunday 17th March 2019, 2.30pm to 6.45pm
Venue: The Float Spa, 8 Third Avenue, Hove, BN3 2PX

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a psychological approach that can help you to manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. CBT is widely used in depression and anxiety. Its focus is on current problems and looks at the interactions between thoughts, moods, physical symptoms and behaviours. CBT is particularly interested in identifying unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that can trap you in vicious cycles.
You will be introduced to the CBT model and learn how to map out your own cycles with an emphasis on stress and anxiety. We will look at unhelpful thinking styles and unhelpful behaviours. Learning to unpick your experiences in this way enables you to start to make changes in these areas, in turn this can have a positive effect on mood.

There will be time for discussion followed by a short break before we settle in for the second half of the afternoon.

TRE (Tension Release Exercises) is a natural and innovative way to release and manage stress in the body. Debbie is an advanced certified provider of TRE and will guide you through the series of 7 simple exercises which activate a natural reflex of shaking that release muscular tension, calming down the nervous system and encouraging the body to return back to a state of balance. As mammals our physiology is designed to experience, survive and release tension and trauma from the body. However due to human brain development and conditioning we have learnt to suppress this natural reflex to release tension like other mammals – by shaking! TRE is something to be experienced.

£35 per person, £30 when booked with a friend.
